Motion Apparent Diffusion in Biological Systems
نویسنده
چکیده
This work describes the basics of diffusion measurement in biological systems. The first portion is dedicated to providing an understandable, classical-mechanical description of the Stejskal ] Tanner pulse sequence to give the reader an intuitive understanding of the measurement. This is followed by a description of the various aspects of water motion in biological systems that should be taken into account when making and ( ) interpreting apparent diffusion coefficient ADC measurements. These include free diffusion, restricted diffusion, diffusion anisotropy, population weighting, and the difference ( ) between diffusion-weighted imaging DWI and ADC maps. Diffusion-weighted MRI for body imaging applications
Diffusion is the thermally induced motion of water molecules in biological tissues, called Brownian motion. Diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) by means of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) calculation can be used for in vivo quantification of the combined effects of capillary perfusion and diffusion. With the advent of echoplanar imaging (EPI), DWI of the abdomen has become possible with fast imag...
متن کاملExploring the Possibility of Estimating Degree of Glioma Tumors by Measuring Apparent Diffusion Coefficient
Introduction: Most common glioma tumors are tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) which are the cause of about 40 to 50 percent of brain tumors. This type of cancer includes 2 to 3 percent of cancers in the world. Conventional MRI is powerless in the detection and differentiation of benign and malignant tumors. In this case, diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) can create cont...
متن کاملTitle: Anomalous Diffusion in a Weakly Chaotic Dynamical System
Background: Anomalous transport became a very important topic over the past couple of years [1]. This new, highly interdisciplinary field of research deals with deviations from simple Brownian motion in terms of non-Gaussian processes and non-Markovian dynamics. These dynamics lead to phenomena like subor superdiffusion, i.e., where particles spread out slower or faster, respectively, than comp...
متن کاملA numerical treatment of a reaction-diffusion model of spatial pattern in the embryo
In this work the mathematical model of a spatial pattern in chemical and biological systems is investigated numerically. The proposed model considered as a nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation. A computational approach based on finite difference and RBF-collocation methods is conducted to solve the equation with respect to the appropriate initial and boundary conditions. The ability and robust...
متن کاملSeparation of diffusion and perfusion in intravoxel incoherent motion MR imaging.
Intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) imaging is a method the authors developed to visualize microscopic motions of water. In biologic tissues, these motions include molecular diffusion and microcirculation of blood in the capillary network. IVIM images are quantified by an apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), which integrates the effects of both diffusion and perfusion. The aim of this work was...
